In January 2013, Clay and Tanya both moved to Washington, D.C.
Tanya was in her Senior year at the University of Utah and interning for Rep.
Jason Chaffetz and Clay had accepted a job working for Rep. Chris Stewart. Not
knowing each other prior, Clay and Tanya set out on an adventure that would
change their lives.
Clay and Tanya were introduced on January 10th in
323 Cannon House Office Building. When Tanya walked in, she flashed a smile and
a wave to a friend in Clay’s office. Clay’s heart skipped a beat- She had the
most beautiful smile he had ever seen. It was love at first sight. From that
moment on he was determined to receive a smile like that himself and embarked
on the mission to date this gorgeous girl.
Over the course of the next few weeks, Clay devised multiple
plans to see Tanya and ask her on a date. She became known as the “Chaffetz
babe” to anyone who came in contact with him. After multiple failed attempts
and many “work related trips” to the Chaffetz office, Clay realized it was only
a matter of time before another guy beat him to it and finally asked someone for
Tanya’s number.
The couple started dating exclusively in February of 2013
and made it through the summer (including Tanya’s summer study abroad at
Cambridge University in England). Shortly after Tanya’s return from England,
Clay was re-assigned to work in the St. George District Office which made their
long distance relationship much more bearable. They both moved back to D.C. in
January of 2014 after Tanya graduated from the U and later became engaged on
May 9th, 2014.
